  • In 1889, Susan La Flesche Picotte became the first Native American Physician.
  • Susan La Flesche Picotte married in 1894 and later had two children, Caryl and Pierre.
  • In 1913, Susan La Flesche Picotte, known to her patients as "Dr. Sue," raised funds to open a modern hospital in her hometown of Walthill.
  • Dr. Sue's health was rapidly declining, and she died in 1915, 2 years after she built the hospital.  The hospital was declared a national landmark known as Picotte Memorial Hospital.
