In 1889, Susan La Flesche Picotte became the first Native American Physician.
Susan La Flesche Picotte married in 1894 and later had two children, Caryl and Pierre.
In 1913, Susan La Flesche Picotte, known to her patients as "Dr. Sue," raised funds to open a modern hospital in her hometown of Walthill.
Dr. Sue's health was rapidly declining, and she died in 1915, 2 years after she built the hospital. The hospital was declared a national landmark known as Picotte Memorial Hospital.
