The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else's highlight reel. - Stephen Furtick
While growing up, I constantly heard that I should never compare myself to others because things are not always what it seems.
But it was not until I went to my friend's house, the one with no curfew. I had a curfew and had to be home by midnight. However, my friend always bragged about her having the freedom to do whatever she wanted.
So we went to a club and stayed out until 1:00 in the morning. We came back to her house, and let me tell you, the vibe was different than described. Her father was yelling at her and told her that her curfew was at midnight. I gasped because I realized I had the same curfew.
I was supposed to spend the night, but I assume that wasn't allowed either because when I told my friend I had to use the bathroom, I was escorted to the bushes in her backyard. I stayed in the basement by myself the entire night. It wasn't enjoyable.
I was shocked that my freedom friend was as locked up as I was. From that day, I realized that things are not what they seem, and people are great at painting an alternate reality. So before you drool over the lifestyle that someone else is showing you, realize some behind the scenes that they are not willing to share.
